Months below are grouped by UTC date. A local date can fall in the previous month. Times are given to the minute; each phase is one instant.

Learn the shapes

One Moon. Eight familiar faces.

New moon

The lit face points away from Earth. The dark disc in this illustration helps you recognise the phase; a new Moon is usually invisible.

Waxing crescent

A thin curve of light appears. Waxing means the visible lit portion is growing.

First quarter

Half the visible disc is lit. The name marks the first quarter of the cycle, not a quarter-lit face.

Waxing gibbous

More than half the disc is lit, and the bright portion is still growing toward full.

Full moon

The visible face is almost entirely lit. The exact full-phase instant happens when the Moon is opposite the Sun in ecliptic longitude.

Waning gibbous

More than half remains lit, but the visible bright portion is shrinking.

Last quarter

Half the visible disc is lit again, on the opposite side from first quarter. It is also called third quarter.

Waning crescent

A narrow arc remains as the bright portion shrinks toward the next new Moon.

Illustrated surface, not a lunar map. Hemisphere views are schematic: the Moon’s tilt also changes with place and time. Crescent and gibbous shapes show stages between the four dated phases below. NASA’s phase guide ↗
